The day-biter problem
Unlike malaria mosquitoes, the Aedes mosquito that carries dengue bites during the day — peaking in the early morning and late afternoon. That means your villa breakfast and sunset yoga are exactly when you need protection.
Dengue cases in Bali rise during and after the rainy season (roughly November to April), but transmission happens year-round.
Symptoms: breakbone fever earns its name
Dengue typically starts 4–10 days after a bite: sudden high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, intense muscle and joint pain, and often a rash. Many patients describe it as the worst flu of their life.
Warning signs of severe dengue appear as the fever drops: severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding gums, and extreme fatigue. This phase is dangerous — get to a clinic immediately.
Prevention that actually works
Use repellent containing DEET (30–50%) or picaridin, reapplying every few hours. Wear loose, light-coloured long sleeves at dawn and dusk, and make sure your accommodation has screens or air conditioning.
Empty standing water around your villa weekly — flower pots, pet bowls and blocked gutters are Aedes nurseries.
Think you have dengue?
Our clinics offer rapid dengue NS1 testing with results in about 30 minutes, plus full blood counts to monitor platelets. Avoid ibuprofen and aspirin if dengue is suspected — paracetamol only — and come in for a test rather than guessing.
